About this course

Participants explore zines as independent, low-cost publications, considering their culture and history while developing a zine around a subject of their choice. The course covers image creation with analogue and digital media, collage, typography, page layout, format design and booklet construction. It also considers how mistakes can generate ideas and introduces low-fi construction and printing processes. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations, practical work, individual and group tutoring, discussions and reflection on participants’ work.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners, including artists, illustrators, designers and other creatives, and does not require previous knowledge or experience. Participation includes practical individual work, group discussions, demonstrations and reflection on developing work. Learners need sufficient English to follow instructions and health and safety information.

Before you go

  • Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
  • Learners are advised to bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook for recording ideas.
  • An A3 folder and/or USB drive is advised for transporting work.
  • Any additional materials will be discussed during the course if required.
