Fashion Foundations: Victorian Corsetry 1

About this course

The course examines how corsetry shaped silhouettes in a selected historical period, combining historical study with contemporary approaches to period construction. Participants develop a corset design to their own measurements and work through the process from initial concept to fitting and finish. Teaching combines whole-class instruction, demonstrations, technical discussion and individual support. The construction process covers pattern-making, boning channels, sewing methods and professional finishing, with regular feedback throughout the project.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners at Beginners/Intermediate level, but previous sewing experience, familiarity with pattern cutting and experience using sewing machines are required. Sessions combine group teaching with individual support, and class activities may involve standing at high tables.

Before you go

• Participants must bring a basic sewing kit, including fabric scissors, trimming scissors, dressmaker's pins, a tape measure, a tracing wheel, carbon paper, hand-sewing needles and threads.
• Participants must provide their own fabrics, haberdashery and threads. Further specialist materials and equipment will be discussed in the first lesson.
• Pattern paper and card are available in the studios, and some pattern-cutting tools are provided for studio use.
• Access to a sewing machine and basic equipment at home will support work outside class.
• A health and safety induction is required before using machinery or specialist equipment. Sewing machines have foot-operated speed controls.
• The studios are on the first floor, with lift access. Learners who may find standing at high tables difficult should inform the tutor.
