About this course

The course explores film as both a representation of the past and a source that shapes historical understanding. It considers biopics, documentaries, costume dramas, newsreels and experimental historical narratives, examining their visual language and treatment of real events. Teaching combines illustrated lectures, group discussion and close film analysis. Topics include the ethics of dramatising history, the relationship between historical accuracy and cinematic truth, and theories of collective memory and visual historiography.

What you'll learn

  • Identify different ways films construct historical narratives across periods and genres.
  • Analyse how cinematic techniques shape representations of the past.
  • Evaluate the tension between historical accuracy and cinematic truth.
  • Assess films as cultural artefacts that reflect the periods in which they were produced.
  • Discuss theories of collective memory and visual historiography.

Is this course right for you?

  • Participation includes discussion and open debate rather than only lecture-based learning.
  • There is no required homework or assessment.
