About this course
The course traces the western from its major Hollywood period through television, revisionist and psychological forms, spaghetti westerns, neo-westerns and contemporary examples. It considers directors, stars, studios, recurring stories and the genre’s relationship to ideas of American history and identity. Teaching combines tutor introductions, film extracts, analysis of longer sequences and small- and large-group discussion. A tutor-created remix is also used to prompt examination of film style and technique.
