Flush setting for jewellery makers

About this course

The course develops flush setting techniques for round brilliant-cut stones, which are set level with a metal surface. Participants make and adapt a setting tool, produce a sheet-metal practice sample and use a Vernier gauge to take accurate measurements. Demonstrations, photographic examples and hand-outs introduce the tools and processes involved. Practice begins in copper before learners add flush-set stones to their own jewellery or work made during the course. The suitability of design ideas for flush setting is also discussed, with tube and small collet settings covered only if time and demand allow.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate jewellery makers who are reasonably confident with basic jewellery-making skills. Participants should be able to follow written and spoken instructions, demonstrations and health and safety information, use simple measurements and calculations, and take part in group discussion.

Before you go

• Basic jewellery-making tools and equipment are provided.
• Basic materials, including base metals, chemicals and sundries, are provided in reasonable quantities.
• Saw blades, sandpaper, burrs and cubic zirconia gemstones are provided for practice.
• Sensible footwear is required. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted.
