About this course

The course extends flute technique and musical understanding through work on tone, articulation, intonation, embouchure, breathing, phrasing, dynamics, vibrato and posture. Teaching includes tutor demonstrations of exercises and repertoire, opportunities to play with the tutor and solo, and learning through recordings and listening to other participants. Repertoire spans classical, folk, jazz and pop, with detailed study of core flute works. Sessions also cover music theory, style, aural skills, sight-reading, memorisation, improvisation and creative approaches to practice and performance, including contemporary techniques such as flutter-tonguing.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for advanced flute players at approximately Grade 5 or equivalent experience and beyond. The fast-paced sessions assume fluent playing from bottom C to top A and the ability to sight-read. Participants are expected to practise between classes and will work both individually and with others.

  • Includes solo playing as well as work with the tutor and other participants
  • Practice between classes is essential

Before you go

  • Most ensemble music is provided by the tutor.
  • Participants may need to purchase their own solo music.
  • A device is needed to record practice outside class time.
  • Notepaper and a pen or a device may be used for taking notes.
