About this course

The course develops tone, tuning, articulation, posture, breath control, embouchure, finger technique and scales, alongside aural perception, sight-reading, memorisation and improvisation. Musical theory, interpretation and style are explored through classical, folk, jazz and pop repertoire for solo flute and ensembles. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations with guided exercises, playing alongside the tutor, solo spots and opportunities to play with other students, piano accompaniment and recordings. Learners also develop their musicianship by listening to recordings and classmates, with practice between classes forming part of the course.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate flautists who have developed beyond fundamental playing skills. The stated standard is at least three years' experience and approximately grade 3 to 5, including fluent playing from bottom D to top F and sight-reading in simple time. Learners need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, join class discussions and practise between classes.

Before you go

• Most ensemble music is supplied by the tutor through Google Classroom.
• Learners need to obtain solo music for the course; the tutor will advise on suitable selections.
• A device for recording outside-class practice is required.
• A paper notebook, pen or note-taking device may be useful.
• The Rubank Intermediate Method and Rubank Advanced Method for Flute, Volume 1 are recommended course books.
