Foldform

Jewellery Making

Beginner

A beginner-level foldforming taster combining demonstrations, guided metalsmithing practice and decorative finishing techniques.

About this course

The workshop introduces foldforming, in which folded metal is shaped through hammering or rolling to create three-dimensional forms. Participants make a series of samples, experimenting with different folds before adapting selected designs for smaller-scale jewellery ideas or display pieces. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations with class practice and individual guidance. Alongside foldforming, the course covers annealing, hammer forging, filing, saw piercing, cleaning, polishing, burnishing and flame patination.

What you'll learn

  • Create a range of three-dimensional forms using different foldforming techniques.
  • Apply annealing, hammer forging, filing and saw piercing in small-scale metalwork.
  • Use cleaning, polishing, burnishing and flame patination to finish metal samples.
  • Adapt foldformed designs for smaller-scale jewellery ideas or decorative display.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners, including those starting with little or no experience. Participants follow demonstrations, practise techniques in a group and receive individual guidance. The workshop involves hammering and working safely with a hot flame.

  • Hearing protection is relevant because the hammering can be noisy.
  • Some work involves handling hot materials and using a flame.

Before you go

  • Copper sheet is used for the foldforming samples.
  • Bring ear defenders or earplugs if available; disposable earplugs are provided otherwise.
  • An apron is requested. Reading glasses, if needed, and a notebook and pen may also be brought.
  • Wear casual clothing that can tolerate dust or damage, avoiding loose sleeves and anything that could catch. Wear flat, closed-toe shoes and tie back long hair.
  • Most of the workshop is at street level in a step-free showroom. Some specialist equipment is in a lower-level workshop reached by stairs, with no lift access.
