What Pre-intermediate (A2+) French means

At A2+ French, learners can connect simple sentences, give reasons and manage a wider range of familiar situations.

  • Explain a preference

Je préfère voyager en train parce que c’est plus confortable et que je peux lire.

I prefer travelling by train because it is more comfortable and I can read.

  • Handle a small problem

La chambre est très froide. Pourriez-vous vérifier le chauffage ?

The room is very cold. Could you check the heating?

  • Describe an experience

L’année dernière, j’ai visité Lyon et j’ai beaucoup aimé son architecture.

Last year I visited Lyon and really liked its architecture.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops communication across speaking, listening, reading and writing. Learners practise guided conversations, role-plays and discussions, work with real-world audio and short authentic texts, and complete structured writing tasks such as emails and descriptions. Pair work, group activities, games, presentations and audio-visual resources support the teaching, with homework recommended for consolidation. Topics include life experiences, lifestyles, future plans and aspirations. Language work revises past, present and future tenses and introduces relative pronouns such as qui and que, alongside more complex and hypothetical structures. Cultural content covers autobiographical novels, daily life and new sports in French-speaking countries.

What you'll learn

  • Describe personal experiences and significant moments in life with greater detail
  • Narrate past events using a wider range of tenses and linked ideas
  • Compare lifestyles and express opinions in discussions
  • Discuss future plans, aspirations and possible changes
  • Use relative pronouns and more complex sentence structures in familiar contexts

  • Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
