What Intermediate (B1) French means

At B1 French, learners can deal with most everyday situations and explain experiences, opinions and plans in connected language.

  • Express an opinion

Je pense que le télétravail est utile, même s’il peut parfois être assez isolant.

I think working from home is useful, although it can sometimes be quite isolating.

  • Explain a plan

Je veux améliorer mon français afin de pouvoir travailler à l’étranger l’année prochaine.

I want to improve my French so I can work abroad next year.

  • Tell a short story

Nous allions à la plage quand il s’est mis à pleuvoir, alors nous avons changé de programme.

We were heading to the beach when it started raining, so we changed our plans.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops spoken and written French through pair work, group activities, role plays, games, presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources. Discussion topics include past and future travel, musical tastes, lifestyles, art, peace through music and superstitions in French-speaking cultures. Language work covers subject and object pronouns, adverbs, the imparfait and passé composé, plus-que-parfait, past infinitive and present conditional. • Use subject and object pronouns more accurately in speech and writing.
  • Express opinions and preferences on topics including travel, culture and lifestyle.
  • Apply more specific vocabulary when discussing personal interests and wider social subjects.
  • Construct more complex sentences to explain ideas, opinions and hypotheses.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners at B1 level who have studied French recently for at least three years or have completed French 2 Upper. Participants should be ready to communicate with increasing accuracy and fluency, exchange ideas about work and lifestyles, and take part in spoken pair and group activities.
