What Beginner (A1) French means

At A1 French, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

Je m’appelle Léa. J’habite à Londres et je travaille dans un café.

My name is Léa. I live in London and I work in a café.

  • Order in a café

Je voudrais un café et un croissant, s’il vous plaît.

I would like a coffee and a croissant, please.

  • Ask for directions

Excusez-moi, où est la gare ?

Excuse me, where is the station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

This course extends elementary French through topics including family, daily routines, leisure activities, hobbies and the local area. Learners work with present-tense irregular verbs, questions, adjective and possessive agreement, prepositions, place names and transport vocabulary. Cultural material includes Paris, Lyon and festivals from the French-speaking world. Teaching centres on spoken interaction and communication, using pair and group work, role plays, games, presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources. Homework is highly recommended to reinforce classroom learning.

What you'll learn

  • Describe family members using simple French sentences
  • Talk about daily routines and regular activities
  • Discuss hobbies, interests and leisure activities
  • Describe the area where they live, including local places and facilities
  • Form and ask basic questions using relevant French structures

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners continuing from French Beginner: Module 1 or with around 15 hours of French study. The Beginner (A1) label indicates an early stage of language learning, while the course assumes some familiarity with introducing oneself, asking simple questions and handling basic café transactions. Participation includes spoken interaction, pair and group activities and role plays.

  • Learners should be comfortable recognising common French sounds and pronunciation patterns
  • Homework is highly recommended to consolidate classroom learning
  • The course uses collaborative activities as well as spoken practice

Before you go

  • The course uses Google Classroom for teaching and learning resources
  • A textbook and exercise book based on units 2, 3 and 4 of Entre Nous 1 are specified; learners are advised to wait until after the first class before buying them
