At A1 French, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

About this course
The course develops French for everyday situations, including discussing routines and preferences, asking questions, ordering in cafés, shopping and requesting information at stations. Language work covers reflexive and irregular verbs, question words, frequency adverbs, negation, the passé composé of regular verbs, time expressions and descriptions of people. Lessons use spoken interaction, pair and group work, role plays, games, presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources. Cultural content considers daily life across the French-speaking world, with particular attention to Paris.

- Discuss habits, routines, leisure activities and preferences in French
- Ask and answer questions about other people’s routines and activities
- Use the present tense, reflexive verbs, negative forms and selected irregular verbs in everyday communication
- Talk about recent events using the passé composé of regular verbs
- Participate in short conversations in cafés, shops and train stations
Is this course right for you?
This course is intended for learners who have completed French Beginners: Module 2 or studied French recently for about a year. The Beginner (A1) label indicates an early stage of language learning, but the stated starting point is beyond complete beginner level. Learners should be comfortable using present-tense verbs and taking part in pair and group speaking activities.
- Previous study of French is expected
- Learners should be able to discuss family, routines, leisure, interests and where they live
- Homework is highly recommended for consolidating classroom learning

- The course is based on units 4–5 of the textbook and exercise book Entre Nous 1, published by EDML, ISBN 978-84-19236-59-3. The provider suggests waiting until after the first class before buying it.
