About this course
The course examines French film history through a curated selection of films from different periods, considering changes in cinematic form, visual style and film spectatorship. Each screening is introduced by the tutor and followed by discussion in the full group. Sessions use collective viewing alongside approaches from film studies, including historical, personal and theoretical perspectives. The course is concerned with both the films themselves and the experience of watching and discussing them together.

The course is intended for learners at all levels and does not require particular skills. It introduces aspects of film studies while also offering scope for those who already have film knowledge. Participation includes watching complete films and contributing to large-group discussions.

- Films are screened with English subtitles.
- Learners should bring a pen and paper or a laptop/device for notes; handouts are provided.
- Looking into a film before its session may be useful but is not essential.
