What Elementary (A2) French means

At A2 French, learners can handle simple routine exchanges and describe familiar aspects of everyday life.

  • Describe your routine

    D’habitude, je vais au travail en métro et je rentre vers six heures.

    I usually go to work by Tube and return at around six.

  • Make a simple plan

    Tu veux aller au cinéma samedi après-midi ?

    Would you like to go to the cinema on Saturday afternoon?

  • Talk about the recent past

    Hier, j’ai dîné avec des amis, puis nous avons fait une promenade.

    Yesterday I had dinner with friends, then we went for a walk.

About this course

The course develops French for everyday situations through lessons taught primarily in French, with an emphasis on spoken communication. Learners practise listening, speaking, reading and writing through interactive activities including group work and role-play. Topics include work organisation, daily routines, household responsibilities, schedules and mealtimes in France and Francophone countries. Language work covers time expressions, prepositions, selected verb forms, infinitives and pronominal verbs, alongside sociocultural themes such as intergenerational living and holiday routines.

  • Use time indicators, time prepositions and expressions related to schedules and frequency.
  • Apply selected French verb forms, including verbs ending in -cer, pouvoir, vouloir, devoir and common -ir verbs.

  • Discuss sociocultural topics including household chores, intergenerational living and holiday routines.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners continuing their French studies at Elementary level (A2). Previous study equivalent to French Level 4 or at least 48 class hours is recommended. Participation involves spoken interaction, group work and role-play, with lessons conducted mainly in French.

  • Recommended for learners already studying French rather than complete beginners.
  • Progression is based on class participation and self-study, with no formal tests.
