French Song Masterclasses

About this course

Across a series of masterclasses, singers explore French song through interpretation, language and performance. Work with the vocal and language coach and collaborative pianist includes spoken introductions, singing selected repertoire, examining the text and considering how the vocal and piano parts interact. Participants also listen to and discuss one another’s performances, reflect on feedback and share related listening, research and period art forms. Physical and vocal exercises form part of the sessions, alongside performance work on a range of French songs.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for advanced singers, despite the catalogue level being listed as Intermediate (B1), with entry through audition and a stated expectation of at least Grade 8 or equivalent. Participation involves performing, introducing songs, listening to other singers and contributing to group discussion and feedback.

• Entry is through a successful audition.
• The stated standard is at least Grade 8 or equivalent.
• Participants prepare and perform several French songs during the course.

Before you go

• For the audition, prepare one French song and bring two copies of the music, one for the tutor and one for the pianist.
• For the course, prepare three or four different pieces. Memorisation is possible but not essential.
• Preparation includes a word-for-word translation of the songs, their meaning, and consideration of how the vocal and piano lines combine.
• Bring a pencil or pen, a notebook and two copies of the music to class.
