About this course

Learners make functional or sculptural ceramic forms using techniques including coiling, pinch, slab building and press moulding. The course introduces different types of clay, slip decoration and glazing, with surfaces developed for earthenware and stoneware temperatures. Improvers can extend their hand-building and design skills through personal or course projects, with an introduction to throwing on the wheel. Teaching combines practical demonstrations, group discussions, slide lectures, individual tutorials and personal tuition. The course also considers historical and contemporary ceramics, while learners review their own work and receive tutor feedback.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and improvers, with all levels learning alongside one another. Beginners are introduced to fundamental clay and glazing techniques, while improvers can develop existing hand-building and design skills through personal or course projects. Participation includes practical demonstrations, individual tuition, group discussions and self-review.

• Learners are encouraged to evaluate their work and contribute to group discussions.

Before you go

• Old clothes and sensible footwear are advised.
• Personal tools may be brought but are not essential.
• Most ceramic materials are covered by the course fee. Clay is charged at £2.75 per 500g before firing; porcelain costs £24 per bag or £12 per half bag.
• Materials used are paid for in the final week by contactless card.
• Learners must follow workshop practice and health and safety guidance.
• Pottery wheels may pose a serious risk to people with pacemakers or internal defibrillators. Those affected should contact the Ceramics Department before enrolling to discuss whether they can work in the studio when wheels are in use.
