From one Empire to the other: a taste of global history and global politics

About this course

This introductory course considers how major powers have shaped global politics and economics, beginning with the British Empire and the United States before turning to the changing roles of China, Russia and India. It places colonial, imperial and global history in conversation with politics, examining forms of worldmaking and resistance. Teaching combines presentation by the teacher with group discussion, using historical developments to help participants interpret current affairs and consider how the study of world history connects to contemporary global change.
