Functional Skills English – Level 1

About this course

The course develops practical English for everyday life and work. Learners work with different types of text, identifying main points, locating details and reading for specific purposes. They plan, organise and review writing for different audiences, applying basic grammar and checking spelling and accuracy. Teaching combines classroom instruction with activities and online learning materials. Formal assessment consists of reading and writing exams, alongside a speaking and listening assessment. The course leads to a nationally recognised Level 1 qualification.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners developing their English for everyday and workplace communication. An initial assessment is required before starting, and the stated entry requirement is Entry Level 3 Functional Skills English. Participation includes classroom activities, discussion and formal assessment.

• Assessment includes reading and writing exams, plus speaking and listening.
• Successful learners can progress to Functional Skills English Level 2.
