Functional Skills Maths Entry 1

About this course

The course develops practical maths skills across four areas: working with numbers up to 20, using money and time, comparing measures, recognising shapes and describing position and direction. Participants also read numerical information, classify objects and create simple tally charts, block diagrams and graphs. Teaching combines classroom instruction with activities, supported by online learning materials for practice outside class. Assessment is through a computer-based exam at the college, with the course preparing learners for Functional Skills Maths Entry Level 1.

What you'll learn

• Read, order, compare and count with numbers up to 20
• Add and subtract numbers within the stated range and use the symbols +, - and =
• Recognise coins, notes and common time, date and calendar information
• Compare everyday measures and identify common two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes
• Use positional and directional vocabulary to describe where objects are
• Read lists and simple charts, then sort objects and draw basic data diagrams

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners working towards Entry Level 1 Maths rather than those starting without any indication of their current level. A computer-based initial assessment is required before joining. Participants should be prepared for classroom learning, online practice and regular independent study, including homework.

Before you go

• Learners need an A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber, a 30cm ruler, a highlighter pen and a calculator.
