About this course

The course develops practical numeracy across counting, ordering numbers, calculations, fractions, decimals, money, time, metric measures, temperatures and scales. It also covers identifying shapes, using positional language, extracting information from tables and charts, and presenting data in different formats. Teaching combines classroom instruction with hands-on activities, supported by online learning materials for practice outside class. Progress is assessed through an exam at the college, with opportunities for resits if needed.

What you'll learn

  • Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with whole numbers
  • Read, write, compare and order numbers, including odd and even numbers
  • Apply basic maths to money, time, metric measures, temperatures and simple scales
  • Recognise 2-D and 3-D shapes and describe their properties and positions
  • Interpret information in lists, tables, diagrams and bar charts
  • Sort, classify and represent information using different formats

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners developing foundational maths for everyday situations or further study. Learners should be prepared to take part in classroom and practical activities, complete an initial assessment and commit regular time to homework.

  • A computer-based initial assessment is completed to establish the learner’s current maths level
  • The course requires at least 3 to 4 hours of homework each week
  • Learners work towards an Entry Level 2 qualification and may progress to Entry Level 3 Functional Skills Maths

Before you go

  • Bring an A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber, a 30cm ruler, a highlighter pen and a calculator to each session
  • Online learning materials are provided for practice outside the classroom
  • Progress is assessed through one college exam sitting, with the option of two resits if needed
