About this course

The course develops functional maths across four areas: number, measure, shape and space, and handling data. Learners work with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, money, time, measurements, geometric properties, position and direction. They also extract, compare and present information using tables, charts, diagrams and graphs. Teaching combines classroom instruction with activities and access to online learning materials for study outside class. The course prepares learners for a nationally recognised Functional Skills Maths Entry 3 qualification, assessed through an exam at the college.

What you'll learn

  • Calculate with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and money at Entry 3 level.
  • Measure and compare length, weight, capacity, temperature and time using appropriate units and instruments.
  • Identify and sort two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes using their properties.
  • Describe position and direction using positional vocabulary, compass points and turns.
  • Extract, compare, organise and represent information in tables, charts, diagrams and simple graphs.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners working towards Entry Level 3 Maths. The level indicates study of foundational functional maths rather than higher-level topics, but an initial computer-based assessment is required to establish current maths level. Learners should be prepared for classroom study, online work and regular homework.

  • A computer-based initial assessment is required before joining.
  • Learners should expect to complete at least three to four hours of homework each week.
  • The course includes one exam sitting, with the option of two resits if needed.

Before you go

  • Learners need an A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber, a 30cm ruler and a highlighter pen.
  • A scientific calculator is required, preferably a Casio FX series model.
  • Learners should allow at least three to four hours per week for homework.
