About this course
The course develops mathematical skills for everyday situations, work and further study. Participants work with whole numbers, negative numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and direct proportion, applying calculations to money, time and measurement. Sessions also cover shapes, angles, plans and nets, alongside data handling and probability. Learners practise representing information in tables and charts, calculating mean and range, and using estimates to check answers. Tutor guidance is provided while participants work at their own pace, with a Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills Maths Level 1 exam at the end.
What you'll learn
- Perform calculations with whole numbers, negative numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages.
- Convert between fractions, decimals and percentages, and apply ratios, proportion and percentage calculations.
- Measure and describe angles, recognise properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes, and interpret basic plans, elevations and nets.
- Calculate discounts and simple interest, and convert between common units of measurement, money and time.
- Represent and interpret discrete data using tables, diagrams and charts, and calculate measures including mean and range.
- Use probability to compare events and express outcomes as fractions.
