About this course

The course develops Level 1 maths across four areas: number, measure, shape and space, and handling data. Topics include calculations with fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios; financial calculations; units, scale, area, perimeter, volume and angles; and presenting and interpreting data using charts, averages and probability. Teaching combines classroom instruction with activities, supported by online learning materials for study outside class. Learners work towards a national Functional Skills Maths Level 1 qualification, assessed through an exam at the end of the course.

What you'll learn

  • Calculate with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages and ratios
  • Apply measurement, scale, area, perimeter, volume and angle calculations
  • Represent and interpret data using tables, charts, averages and probability
  • Use simple formulae, order of operations and estimation in calculations
  • Recognise equivalences between common fractions, decimals and percentages

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners already working towards Level 1 Maths rather than those starting from a complete beginner level. A computer-based initial assessment is required to indicate and evidence current maths level. Learners should expect classroom activities, online study and at least three to four hours of homework each week.

  • Requires a significant commitment to the course and college
  • Includes one college-based exam sitting, with up to two resits available if needed
  • Level 1 Functional Skills Maths is described as an entry requirement for many Level 2 courses

Before you go

  • Learners are expected to have an A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber, a 30cm ruler and a highlighter pen.
  • A scientific calculator is required, preferably from the Casio FX series.
