Functional Skills Maths – Level 2

About this course

The course covers calculations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and proportion, alongside money, units, rates, area, volume, scale drawings, coordinates and geometric representations. Learners also study averages, probability and correlation, using diagrams and tables to interpret data. Teaching combines classroom instruction with activities and online learning materials for study outside lessons. Progress is assessed through a computer-based college exam, with the possibility of two re-sits if required. Successful completion leads to a nationally recognised Level 2 qualification.

What you'll learn

• Apply operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and proportion.
• Calculate money problems, including discounts, tax, budgeting and compound interest.
• Use units, formulae, scale drawings, coordinates and geometric methods to solve problems involving shape, space and measures.
• Calculate and interpret averages, including the mean, median, mode and range, to compare data sets.
• Determine and express probabilities using fractions, decimals, percentages, diagrams and tables.
• Interpret scatter diagrams and identify positive or negative correlation.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who are working towards Level 2 Maths. A computer-based initial assessment is required to evidence current ability. It combines classroom participation with online study and requires a significant commitment, including regular homework, followed by a college exam.

• Learners should be prepared to complete at least 3 to 4 hours of homework each week.
• A computer-based initial assessment is required before or during enrolment.
• Assessment is through one college exam, with up to two re-sit opportunities if needed.

Before you go

• Bring an A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber, a 30cm ruler and a highlighter pen to lessons.
• Bring a scientific calculator, preferably one from the Casio FX series.
• The course includes at least 3 to 4 hours of homework per week.
• Learners must complete a computer-based initial assessment to evidence their current maths level.
• Progress is assessed through a college exam, with the option of two re-sits if required.
