About this course
The workshop begins with an introduction to Furoshiki’s history, cultural significance and continued use in Japan, alongside some Japanese language. Tutor demonstrations and PowerPoint slides explain a range of techniques, which participants then practise during the session. Activities progress from straightforward wrapping methods to more decorative and practical approaches for items such as gifts, bottles and bags. Short videos may be provided for viewing before the workshop.

Is this course right for you?
The course is open to learners at all levels, including those with no previous Japanese language or Furoshiki experience. It involves active participation in demonstrations and wrapping activities, so it suits learners willing to practise techniques during the workshop.
- No previous Japanese language or Furoshiki experience is necessary
Before you go
- Bring one or two square pieces of cloth suitable for wrapping, approximately 50cm to 70cm square. A lightweight scarf, bandana or Furoshiki cloth is suitable.
- Small everyday items such as a book, small box or other square item can be brought for wrapping practice.
- You may be asked to watch short videos before the workshop.
