Gemmology

An all-levels introduction to gemmology covering gemstone properties, identification, testing, grading, valuation and responsible sourcing through talks and practical demonstrations.
About this course
The workshop combines illustrated presentations with gemstone samples, demonstrations and practical examination. Participants explore how gemstones form, how their physical and optical properties can be observed, and how gemmologists use instruments such as a polariscope, refractometer and dichroscope to support identification and analysis. The course also considers diamond and coloured gemstone mining, artisanal mining, traceability and responsible sourcing. It examines grading, valuation and pricing, including factors to consider when buying gemstones. There is no jewellery-making project; the focus is on understanding and assessing gemstones.
