What Elementary (A2) French means
At A2 French, learners can handle simple routine exchanges and describe familiar aspects of everyday life.
Describe your routine
D’habitude, je vais au travail en métro et je rentre vers six heures.
I usually go to work by Tube and return at around six.
Make a simple plan
Tu veux aller au cinéma samedi après-midi ?
Would you like to go to the cinema on Saturday afternoon?
Talk about the recent past
Hier, j’ai dîné avec des amis, puis nous avons fait une promenade.
Yesterday I had dinner with friends, then we went for a walk.
These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.
About this course
The course develops French through grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and regular speaking practice. Participants discuss their learning journeys and motivations, describe people and places, talk about study and work, and use dates, years and key verb structures in context. Each lesson combines coursebook-based study with a communicative activity such as a role-play, speaking game, cultural exploration or short presentation. The teacher speaks French throughout, while the course also explores La Francophonie, including French-speaking communities, countries and cultural figures.
What you'll learn
- Discuss personal information, learning experiences and motivations in French
- Use present-tense forms of venir and apprendre in relevant situations
- Form questions with quel, quelle, quels and quelles
- Apply pourquoi, parce que and pour with an infinitive or noun
- Use country and city prepositions, profession and country gender forms, and en + année
- Describe aspects of French-speaking communities and present information about a French-speaking country or community
Is this course right for you?
This course is intended for adults who have completed French Level 1 or an equivalent beginners’ course. The Elementary level indicates a foundation beyond absolute beginner study. Lessons involve regular pair and group speaking, role-play and short presentations, with a slower pace for consolidation.
- Previous completion of French Level 1 or equivalent study is required
- The teacher speaks French throughout, using gesture, visual support and careful language to aid understanding
- The format is designed for learners who prefer more consolidation time rather than a faster-paced course
- Aged 18+ course
Before you go
- The course uses Mon Alter Ego 1 – Livre de l’élève A1, Unit 2. Learners who have not already completed the relevant Level 1 course may need to purchase the book.
