What Beginner (A1) Portuguese means

At A1 Portuguese, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

    Chamo-me Ana. Moro em Londres.

My name is Ana. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    Queria um café, por favor.

I would like a coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    Desculpe, onde fica a estação?

Excuse me, where is the station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course introduces everyday European Portuguese through greetings, personal information, café interactions, numbers, days, locations and simple conversations. Learners develop grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening and comprehension alongside guided speaking practice, including role-plays, pair interviews, surveys, games and short presentations. Lessons combine coursebook work with communicative activities and cultural exploration related to café traditions in Portugal and Brazil. The teacher speaks Portuguese throughout, using gesture, visual support and careful language to aid understanding. Key language includes ser, estar, ficar, chamar-se and regular -ar verbs in the present tense, as well as simple questions and negative sentences.
