What Elementary (A2) Portuguese means
At A2 Portuguese, learners can handle simple routine exchanges and describe familiar aspects of everyday life.
Describe your routine
Normalmente vou de autocarro para o trabalho e chego a casa às seis.
I normally go to work by bus and return home at six.
Make a simple plan
Queres ir ao cinema no sábado à tarde?
Would you like to go to the cinema on Saturday afternoon?
Talk about the recent past
Ontem jantei com amigos e depois fomos dar um passeio.
Yesterday I had dinner with friends and then we went for a walk.
These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.
About this course
The course develops Portuguese through coursebook work, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation practice, with the teacher speaking Portuguese throughout. Lessons focus on describing work, family, people and feelings, using ser and estar, handling travel and immigration situations, and expressing opinions. Communicative activities include role-plays, speaking games, short presentations and guided comparisons of food traditions in Portugal, Brazil and other countries. Learners practise possessive adjectives, demonstrative pronouns, quantifiers, comparative structures and selected present-tense verbs while consolidating earlier Portuguese study.
What you'll learn
- Describe professional routines, workplaces, family members, friends and physical appearance
- Talk about feelings and emotional states using estar and relevant quantifiers
- Apply ser and estar in a wider range of contexts
- Respond to questions in immigration and other official travel situations
- Express opinions and participate in simple discussions and comparisons
- Use possessive adjectives, demonstrative pronouns and selected present-tense verbs in Portuguese
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for adults who have completed Portuguese Level 1 or an equivalent beginners course. Its Elementary level indicates a continuation stage rather than an introduction to Portuguese. The teaching combines whole-class and communicative activities, with learners expected to speak Portuguese in role-plays, discussions and short presentations.
- Previous Portuguese Level 1 study or equivalent experience is required
- Suited to learners who want more time to consolidate language than a faster-paced format provides
- The course uses Portuguese throughout lessons, with teacher support to aid understanding
- Designed for adults aged 18 and over
Before you go
- The course uses Passaporte para Português 1 – Livro do Aluno A1/A2. Learners who do not already have the book need to purchase it.
