What Elementary (A2) German means

At A2 German, learners can handle simple routine exchanges and describe familiar aspects of everyday life.

  • Describe your routine

    Normalerweise fahre ich mit dem Bus zur Arbeit und komme um sechs nach Hause.

    I normally go to work by bus and return home at six.

  • Make a simple plan

    Möchtest du am Samstagnachmittag ins Kino gehen?

    Would you like to go to the cinema on Saturday afternoon?

  • Talk about the recent past

    Gestern habe ich mit Freunden zu Abend gegessen und danach sind wir spazieren gegangen.

    Yesterday I had dinner with friends and then we went for a walk.

About this course

The course develops German for everyday situations through topics including holidays, health, weather, telephone conversations, CVs and German-speaking countries. Learners work with the perfect tense, prepositions, modal verbs, and wenn and dass clauses. Teaching centres on spoken communication, with pair work, group activities, role plays and games supported by presentations, handouts and audio-visual materials. The course also introduces discussion of topical issues and includes recommended homework for consolidation.

The course is intended for learners who have studied German for about a year and a half recently or completed the first term of this course. Elementary (A2) indicates developing ability beyond fundamental beginner work. Lessons involve spoken interaction, pair and group activities, role plays and games, with homework recommended.

  • Homework is highly recommended to reinforce class learning
