What Advanced (C1+) German means

At C1+ German, learners can express complex ideas precisely, understand nuance and adapt their language to different contexts.

  • Qualify an argument

So überzeugend die Argumentation im Großen und Ganzen auch ist, lässt sie mehrere unbeabsichtigte Folgen außer Acht.

While the argument is broadly convincing, it overlooks several unintended consequences.

  • Convey nuance

Ich lehne den Vorschlag an sich nicht ab, sondern stelle seine übereilte Umsetzung infrage.

I do not oppose the proposal itself; what I question is the rushed way it is being implemented.

  • Adapt your register

Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn Sie die Entscheidung angesichts der beigefügten zusätzlichen Informationen überdenken würden.

I would be grateful if you would reconsider the decision in light of the additional information attached.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course explores varied everyday and complex subjects through news clips, newspaper articles and spoken interaction. Learners discuss ideas, contribute their own suggestions and revise advanced grammar while working in pairs and groups, taking part in role plays and language games. Presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources support the sessions. The course also addresses comprehension of extended speech, television and films, alongside work with complex factual, literary and specialised texts.

What you'll learn

  • Understand extended spoken German, including speech that is not clearly structured.
  • Follow television programmes and films in German without too much effort.
  • Interpret long, complex factual and literary texts, including specialised articles and longer instructions.
  • Express ideas and opinions fluently, precisely and flexibly in social and professional contexts.
  • Give clear, detailed presentations on complex subjects, developing sub-themes and bringing them to a suitable conclusion.
