About this course

This shared reading group explores a broad selection of literary texts, with an emphasis on short stories and poetry. Sessions combine reading aloud in sections with conversation about participants’ responses, interpretations and personal connections to the writing. The facilitator and group members read the texts together, while anyone who prefers to listen may do so without volunteering to read. Each text is completed during the session, rather than being set as preparation for the following meeting.

What you'll learn

  • Read a range of literary texts alongside other group members
  • Listen to literature being read aloud and follow its development
  • Share responses and opinions about the texts discussed
  • Make connections between the texts and wider thoughts or experiences

Is this course right for you?

The group is intended for beginner-level learners who can read and understand texts written in, or translated into, English. Participation involves listening to other people’s views and responses, which may differ from one’s own. Reading aloud is invited but not compulsory.

  • Suitable for learners who prefer a shared, discussion-based reading format
  • No volunteering to read aloud is required
  • Texts are read in full during the sessions

Before you go

  • Reading materials are provided.
  • No additional reading or work outside the sessions is required.
  • Nothing needs to be brought; a pencil may be useful for optional notes or marking passages.
