About this course

This preparatory course introduces the content, level and expectations of Entry 2 Functional Skills Maths. Classroom activities cover counting, number operations, fractions, decimals, rounding, money, time, metric measures, temperature, shape properties, position and direction, and interpreting information from lists, tables and charts. Learners practise these areas through classroom work, with online materials available for further practice. Progress is reviewed through a folder of work and a Personal Learning Plan, which are marked by the tutor as the course progresses. Successful completion can lead to the Entry 2 Functional Skills Maths course.

What you'll learn

  • Perform calculations involving whole numbers, multiplication, division and remainders.
  • Apply rounding, simple fractions and decimals in appropriate numerical tasks.
  • Use money, time, temperature and metric units in everyday calculations and readings.
  • Identify and describe common two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, including their properties.
  • Extract and compare information from lists, tables, diagrams and bar charts, and classify objects using two criteria.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who already have established Maths skills at Entry 2 and language skills corresponding to ESOL Entry 2 or Entry 3. A BKSB initial assessment is required before starting. It is designed for learners preparing to progress to the Entry 2 Functional Skills Maths qualification through classroom activities and tutor-reviewed work.

Before you go

  • Bring a 30 cm ruler, A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber, a highlighting pen and a scientific calculator to each class.
