About this course

This preparatory course covers the main areas of Entry 3 Functional Skills Maths. Learners work with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, money, time, measurement, shape, position, tables, charts and simple graphs. Activities include calculating, estimating, measuring, sorting shapes, interpreting information and creating frequency tables and graphical representations. Teaching takes place in a classroom, supported by online learning materials for use outside class. Progress is assessed through a folder of work and a Personal Learning Plan, with the tutor marking work completed during the course.

What you'll learn

  • Calculate with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and money using Entry 3 methods.
  • Read, measure, compare and record time, length, capacity, weight and temperature.
  • Identify and sort two- and three-dimensional shapes using their properties.
  • Describe position and direction using compass points and turns.
  • Extract, compare and represent information in tables, diagrams, bar charts and simple line graphs.
  • Use rounding and estimation to check mathematical results.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners preparing to progress to an Entry 3 Functional Skills Maths qualification. Established Entry 3 maths skills are required, and learners must complete and pass an initial assessment. Entry 3 English language skills, shown through screening or evidence of a relevant qualification, are also required.

  • An initial assessment must be completed and passed before starting.
  • Learners need to provide evidence of Entry 3 English or above if this is not confirmed through screening.
  • Successful completion can lead to progression onto the Entry 3 Functional Skills Maths course.

Before you go

  • Learners are expected to bring a standard geometry set, 30 cm ruler, A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber and a highlighting pen to every class.
  • A scientific calculator is required, preferably from the Casio FX series.
  • Evidence of Functional Skills Entry 3 English or above should be brought where applicable.
