About this course

This preparatory course introduces the content, level and expectations of Entry 1 Functional Skills Maths. Learners work with numbers up to 20, basic addition and subtraction, money, time, calendars, measurements, shapes, position and direction. Teaching combines classroom instruction with structured activities, supported by online materials for learning outside class. Progress is assessed through a folder of work and a Personal Learning Plan, with work gathered and marked during the course. Data handling includes reading lists, sorting objects and using simple tally charts, block diagrams and graphs.

What you'll learn

  • Read, order, compare and use whole numbers up to 20, including zero.
  • Add and subtract numbers within the Entry 1 range and use the symbols +, - and =.
  • Recognise and represent money, read analogue and digital clocks, and sequence days, months and seasons.
  • Describe measurements, position and direction, and identify common two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.
  • Read numerical information and create or interpret simple tally charts, block diagrams and graphs.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners preparing to progress to Entry 1 Functional Skills Maths. It requires established Maths skills at Entry 1, demonstrated through a BKSB initial assessment, plus language skills at ESOL Entry 2 or Entry 3. Learners should be prepared to complete assessed work and maintain a Personal Learning Plan.

  • A BKSB initial assessment must be completed and passed before starting.
  • The course is preparation for a further Entry 1 Functional Skills Maths course.
  • Learners use a folder of work and have their progress reviewed during the course.

Before you go

  • Learners are expected to bring a 30 cm ruler, A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folder, pencils, a rubber and a highlighting pen to each class.
  • A scientific calculator is required; a Casio FX-series calculator is suggested.
