Getting Ready for Functional Skills Maths – Level 1

About this course

The course familiarises learners with the content, standard and expectations of the Level 1 Functional Skills Maths qualification. Topics include number operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measurement, geometry, probability and data handling.

What you'll learn

• Apply operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions and percentages.
• Use simple formulae, ratios, direct proportion, rounding and estimation in calculations.
• Convert between units and calculate interest, discounts, area, perimeter and volume.
• Interpret scales, angles, plans, nets and diagrams involving shape and space.
• Represent and analyse data using tables, charts, averages, range and basic probability.

Is this course right for you?

This course is for women who have established Maths skills at Level 1 and are preparing to study the Level 1 Functional Skills Maths qualification. Learners must complete and pass a BKSB initial assessment. Level 1 language skills are also required, evidenced through screening or a Functional Skills Level 1 English qualification or above. Participation includes classroom activities, assessed folder work and online study.

• An initial assessment must be completed and passed before starting.
• The course is intended for learners preparing to progress to Level 1 Functional Skills Maths.
• Level 1 English evidence may need to be provided if it is not established through screening.

Before you go

• Learners are expected to bring a standard geometry set, 30 cm ruler, A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, rubber and highlighting pen to every class.
• A scientific calculator is required, preferably a Casio FX-series model.
