About this course

This preparatory course develops the mathematical knowledge assessed at Level 1 Functional Skills Maths. Topics include number operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measurement, area, perimeter, volume, angles, charts, averages and probability. Classroom instruction is combined with activities, online learning materials and ongoing assessment through a folder of work and a Personal Learning Plan. Tutor-marked work is used to assess and develop mathematical skills during the course.

What you'll learn

  • Apply operations involving whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages and simple ratio
  • Calculate interest, discounts, conversions, area, perimeter and volume in practical contexts
  • Interpret scales, plans, elevations, nets, symmetry, angles and direction
  • Represent and analyse discrete and grouped data using tables, charts, averages and range
  • Calculate and compare probabilities for simple events

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners preparing to progress to Level 1 Functional Skills Maths. It requires established maths skills at Level 1 and language skills at Level 1 or above, evidenced through screening or an existing English qualification. Participation includes classroom activities, independent work and online study.

  • An initial assessment must be completed and passed before starting
  • Learners work towards progression onto Level 1 Functional Skills Maths

Before you go

  • Bring a standard geometry set, 30 cm ruler, A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber and a highlighting pen to every class
  • Bring a scientific calculator, preferably from the Casio FX series
  • Provide evidence of Functional Skills Level 1 English or above if this is being used to demonstrate the required language level
