About this course
The course prepares learners for the content, standard and expectations of Level 2 Functional Skills Maths. Study covers number operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion, alongside money, time, measurement, scale drawings, area, volume and shape. Learners also work with tables, charts, graphs and statistical measures such as mean, median, mode and range. Teaching combines classroom instruction with activities and online learning materials. Progress is assessed through a marked folder of work and a Personal Learning Plan, with successful completion providing progression to the Level 2 Functional Skills Maths course.
What you'll learn
- Perform calculations involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and direct proportion.
- Apply mathematical methods to money, time, measurement, temperature, scale drawings, perimeter, area and volume.
- Extract, organise and present information using tables, diagrams, charts and line graphs.
- Calculate and interpret mean, median, mode and range when comparing data sets.
- Represent and analyse the possible outcomes of combined events using diagrams or tables.
Is this course right for you?
This course is intended for learners preparing to study Level 2 Functional Skills Maths rather than those starting from fundamental mathematical skills. Entry requires established Level 2 maths skills on the BKSB initial assessment and Level 2 English skills, evidenced through screening or recognised qualifications. Regular attendance and participation in classroom activities are expected.
- An initial assessment must be completed and passed before the course begins.
- Learners need to provide evidence of Level 2 English where this is not confirmed through initial screening.
- The course is designed as preparation for progression to Level 2 Functional Skills Maths.
Before you go
- Bring a standard geometry set, 30 cm ruler, A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber and a highlighting pen to every class.
- Bring a scientific calculator, preferably a Casio FX series model.
- Regular attendance, punctuality and participation in examinations are expected.
