Gilding and Gilded Frame Restoration – Introduction

About this course

The course examines how damaged gilded frames can be repaired, including taking impressions and recreating missing ornaments or mouldings. Learners also practise smaller restoration work and are introduced to the preparation and use of rabbit-skin glue, gesso and bole. Teaching combines demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions and individual guidance. Practical exercises cover both oil gilding and water gilding, using traditional tools such as a gilder’s cushion and tip.

The course is intended for beginners as well as learners returning to or refreshing their gilding skills. Participation centres on practical restoration exercises, with opportunities for individual work on a damaged frame or a supplied panel.

Before you go

• Learners may bring an old or damaged gilded frame to work on.
• A small panel is supplied for practical work.
• The college supplies the gilding tools and materials used on the course.
