Glass: Make Handmade Christmas Decorations

About this course

Learners explore glass fusing through set tasks, demonstrations and discussion in a workshop setting. They investigate how different forms of glass can be cut, shaped, layered and stacked to create hanging decorations, bauble clusters and coasters. The course also introduces fusing and slumping processes, with regular tutor feedback as participants develop pieces that combine colour, texture and form. Work includes both ornamental and functional outcomes, with opportunities to consider how selected materials behave within the glass-making process.

The course is open to learners at all levels of experience and is presented as an introduction as well as an opportunity to explore fusing and slumping further. Participation combines tutor-guided set tasks with independent work in a practical workshop.

Before you go

• Tuition, specialist materials, use of specialist equipment and glass kiln firings are included.
• Learners are expected to purchase some kiln-formed glass materials; additional materials and small tools may also be needed following tutor guidance.
• A sketchbook or notebook and drawing or marker pens may be useful for class work.
• Sturdy shoes, boots or trainers must be worn. Open sandals are not suitable, and an apron is required.
• Basic adapted workshop tools are available, and glass and other materials can be bought from the provider.
