Glove Making: Opera Length Gloves

About this course

The course uses an opera-length glove project to introduce pattern drafting and construction. Participants choose a basic style, develop a pattern to fit, assess fabric options and make a glove.

Is this course right for you?

The course is labelled Beginner, but previous sewing machine experience is required. Teaching combines whole-class demonstrations with individual guidance, discussion and feedback. Some activities involve standing at high tables, and learners must be able to read, write and understand fluent English.

Before you go

• Participants must bring a basic sewing kit, pattern-drafting tools and note-taking materials.
• Learners must provide project materials, haberdashery and threads. Requirements are discussed at the beginning of the course.
• Some specialised materials, including calico for toiling, can be purchased from the tutor at cost price.
• Some pattern-cutting and garment-construction tools, paper and card are available for studio use.
• Depending on the class, a sewing-machine bobbin may need to be purchased from the tutor; the charge is refundable at the end of the course.
• A health and safety induction is included, and learners must receive specific training before using machinery or specialist equipment.
• The studio has lift access. Bottled water is permitted, but eating and drinking are not allowed in the fashion studios.
