Glove Making: Opera Length Gloves

About this course

The course introduces glove making through a project focused on a basic opera-length glove. Participants choose a style appropriate to their experience, draft a pattern to fit, assess and adjust the fit, and consider fabric options before making the glove. Teaching combines whole-class demonstrations, examples, samples, hand-outs and discussion with individual guidance. Feedback is provided during the making process, alongside technical support where appropriate. Health and safety instruction is included before learners use machinery or specialist equipment.

Is this course right for you?

Although labelled Beginner, this course requires previous sewing machine experience. It suits learners working on a first glove-making project who can take part in both whole-class teaching and individual practical guidance. Activities may involve standing at high tables, and learners need to read, write and understand fluent English.

Before you go

• Learners must bring a basic sewing kit, pattern-drafting tools and note-taking materials.
• Learners must provide materials, haberdashery and threads for their projects; requirements are discussed at the beginning of the course.
• Some pattern-cutting and garment-construction tools, paper and card are available for use in the studio.
• A health and safety induction is provided before learners use machinery or specialist equipment.
• The fashion studios have lift access to the first floor.
• Food and drink are not permitted in the fashion studios, although bottled water is allowed.
