Granulation Masterclass

About this course

The masterclass introduces the principles of granulation through demonstrations, examination of examples and progressively structured practical exercises. Participants practise producing consistently sized granules, arranging them on flat and three-dimensional forms, and controlling the relationship between heat, mass, metallurgy and design. As their technique develops, participants move towards more independent work, exploring finishing methods and how granulation can complement existing jewellery processes and personal design approaches. The course concludes with the development of a finished granulated piece or element, alongside a set of technical samples.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for practising jewellers and designer-makers with established core workshop skills. It involves independent bench work within a small group, supported by demonstrations, practical exercises and individual guidance. Previous granulation experience is not specified, but participants should be comfortable with fundamental jewellery-making processes and working independently.

• Previous experience of granulation is not required.
• Participants should be confident working independently at the bench.
• Fundamental processes named include piercing, filing, annealing, rolling and soldering.

Before you go

• Initial work uses Britannia silver, with exploration of silver and gold alloys, copper salts and copper plating techniques.
