About this course
This single-session course examines Paul Robeson’s career across music, theatre and film, alongside his activism and influence on social history. It considers his vocal style and repertoire, major roles including Othello and Show Boat, the political pressures he faced, and the international context of his work. Teaching combines tutor presentation with guided listening and viewing, followed by class discussion. The session also considers Robeson’s continuing impact on performers and activists.

The course is designed for learners at all levels and does not require prior knowledge of Paul Robeson, music history or theatre studies. Participation centres on listening, viewing and class discussion. An interest in twentieth-century culture, performance or social history may be useful but is not essential.
