About this course
This course examines Gerald Finzi’s development as a composer, conductor and editor, with attention to his place in British musical life and his support for Ivor Gurney’s music. Sessions consider selected works including the Clarinet Concerto, Dies natalis and Finzi’s songs, particularly settings of Thomas Hardy. Teaching combines lecture, discussion, quizzes, guided listening, video and score study. The course also considers how Finzi’s music was understood by his contemporaries and how it is viewed by audiences today.
