About this course
The course traces Weather Report from its early jazz-fusion experiments through the Jaco Pastorius period and later work. It considers the contributions of Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter and other members, alongside the group’s changing line-ups, rhythmic approaches, electric instrumentation and use of studio technology. Teaching combines lecture material with guided listening, video, quizzes, discussion and score study. Landmark albums and performances provide examples for examining texture, atmosphere, collective improvisation, groove, electronics and the band’s influence on jazz fusion, funk, world music, film music and contemporary music.
