Hand knitting: colourwork

About this course

The course examines how colour can be combined in hand knitting, beginning with colour selection and striping before introducing Fair Isle, Intarsia and Mosaic techniques. It compares the characteristics of each approach and develops the ability to read colourwork charts and patterns. Teaching combines demonstrations, group practice, discussion and individual tuition. Learners practise each technique and make samples for reference, with guidance on researching patterns and designs that use colour and texture.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for improving and experienced knitters who want to explore colourwork beyond simply following patterns. Learners should already know basic knitting stitches and be able to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, simple measurements and calculations. Participation includes group discussion, guided practice and individual tuition.

• Learners are expected to work with written and verbal instructions
• Practice between classes is encouraged

Before you go

• Bring 4 mm needles and at least two balls of appropriately weighted coloured yarn for practice.
• Yarn and needles are available for use in class.
• A sketchbook or file is advisable for keeping samples, handouts and notes.
• Course materials and handouts are stored in Google Classroom, which learners need to access before the sessions begin.
