Hand knitting for improvers

About this course

Learners develop more complex hand-knitting techniques, including lace, cables, Aran structures, shaping and textured stitches. The course also covers reading patterns and charts, managing tension, knitting in the round with double-pointed and circular needles, and professional finishing. Teaching combines group demonstrations with individual guidance as participants practise techniques and make sample swatches. Repetition and practice are central to the sessions, with opportunities to apply new structures to personal knitting projects.

Is this course right for you?

This intermediate course is intended for learners moving on from a beginners’ course and for knitters who feel rusty and want to develop existing skills. Participants should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and handouts, take part in group discussion, and use basic measurements and calculations.

Before you go

• Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
• Participants are asked to bring 5mm or 6mm knitting needles and a ball of cream wool suitable for the needle size.
• A sketchbook or folder is advisable for storing swatches, notes and handouts.
• A digital camera may be useful for recording stitches, fabrics and mark-making.
• Course materials and handouts are stored in Google Classroom; learners will need to log in before the sessions.
