Hand stitched textiles: Indian influence

About this course

The course examines techniques associated with Phulkari and Banjara textiles, including mirror work, appliqué and a selection of hand stitches such as satin stitch, chain, open chain and herringbone. Demonstrations, examples and set exercises introduce traditional methods before participants adapt them into contemporary samples. Work may combine fabric and paper appliqué with traditional and non-traditional embellishments, while exercises also consider scale, colour and developing ideas. Learners will take part in group discussion and use the techniques to create a collection of experimental samples.
