About this course
The course combines guided performance of prepared harpsichord repertoire with listening, observation and discussion. Learners examine ornamentation, figured bass, articulation, dance character and historical performance practice, supported by lectures, presentations and written handouts. Study focuses on Baroque keyboard writing and the historical and stylistic context of 17th- and 18th-century music. Learners also listen to recordings, compare interpretations and may perform for classmates in informal end-of-term concerts.
What you'll learn
- Play a varied selection of harpsichord repertoire using appropriate technique and style.
- Make more informed critical judgements when listening to Baroque and harpsichord music.
- Explain aspects of the historical and stylistic context of 17th- and 18th-century music.
- Apply considerations of ornamentation, articulation, dance character and historical performance practice to repertoire study.
