Heat, light and colour: introduction to enamelling

About this course

Participants will prepare metal and enamel, then apply and fire opaque and transparent vitreous enamels in a kiln. Techniques include stencilling, sgraffito, enamel printing, counter enamel, gold lustre and basse-taille, using textured metal beneath transparent enamel. The course also considers glossy and matt finishes and ways to incorporate enamel into jewellery and two- or three-dimensional work. Teaching combines step-by-step group demonstrations with individual guidance, discussion and feedback. Learners will produce samples to inform their own designs, with sketchbook or scrapbook work and metal preparation encouraged between sessions.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners as well as learners with some previous enamelling experience. Participation includes following demonstrations and written or verbal instructions, developing individual design ideas, and taking part in group discussion and feedback. Some preparation between sessions is encouraged.

Before you go

• General tools and equipment are supplied, with a reasonable amount of copper sheet and wire available for use.
• Bring a notebook, pencil and sketchbook or scrapbook. Learners may also bring reference images, found objects, drawings or existing enamel design ideas.
• An apron is recommended to protect clothing.
• Wear sensible footwear. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted; hair and scarves must be tied back.
• Bring reading glasses or magnification if needed for close-up work.
